13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[a] they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16
Finding your purpose in life seems like a rite of passage for each of us.
We finish high school and immediately start working or continue our education.
During this time we ask the question.
What is my purpose?
What is my passion?
What was I made to do?
What am I best at?
I’m happy that we ask ourselves these questions.
I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t ask them myself.
I still ask them!
But recently I had an experience with God where I was begging him to reveal to me what I was made to do on this earth as it related to my career.
He didn’t answer me, but He asked me a question.
“Why does your purpose have to line up with your career?”
I was immediately embarrassed.
I caught myself thinking on such a small scale.
Why does me being a teacher, an analyst, a customer service manager or an urban planner have to be where my purpose stops?
We do everything we can to find our purpose in life and if we aren’t careful we can be selfish when we think our purpose has to be related specifically to our career.
God may want to use us in multiple ways.
So don’t diminish His plan for you.
Life isn’t about finding one thing and then cruising along.
God has a real purpose for our lives that can start with our career, but it ends with being a preserver of His word and spreading the gospel.
We are the Salt and the Light of the world!
To be used according to his purpose.
His purpose for our lives could be witnessing to one person 12 years from now.
Or being the only friendly face people see daily.
Our purpose could be the one act of kindness in a crowd of bullies.
Or saving the life of that man or woman we might see crossing the street.
Don’t be selfish in thinking that your purpose in life is only to serve you.
Let God guide you to your purpose.
Start giving yourself to Him and experience His guidance on a fulfilling path.
The fulfillment He provides can’t be satisfied by a career, amount of money, or hobby.
All are important, but none compare to when you search for what God has for you and you follow His will.
